Description:

Khalid Abdullah's homebred Kingman was honored as Europe's 2014 Horse of the Year and top 3-year-old colt Nov. 11 when the 24th annual Cartier Racing Awards were presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London, England.

A son of Invincible Spirit bred in Great Britain by Juddmonte Farms, Kingman was trained by John Gosden to win five of six starts, with one second, during his 2014 campaign. Included in his victories were four group I races in three different countriesTattersalls Irish Two Thousand Guineas, St. James's Palace Stakes, QIPCO Sussex Stakes, and the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard-Jacques Le Maroisas well as the AON Greenham Stakes (Eng-III). He also finished second in the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I).

Kingman outpolled last year's Horse of the Year Treve, who successfully defended her title in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), dual classic winner Australia, and Noble Mission  , a full brother to the outstanding Frankel who was voted the Cartier Award for older horse.

The Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit was presented to Sheikh Hamdan, whose Shadwell Estate Co. has been a major breeding presence in Europe, North America, Dubai, and Australia. In 2014, Sheikh Hamdan bred and raced Investec Oaks (Eng-I) winner Taghrooda, who was honored with the Cartier Award for 3-year-old filly.

The Cartier Racing Awards are based on points earned in pattern races in Europe throughout 2014 (40%), opinions of a panel of racing journalists (30%), and votes from readers of Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph and Channel 4 Racing viewers (30%).
