With the Breeders' Cup behind us, all eyes now turn to the Triple Crown trail in pursuit of the Kentucky Derby and its sister race, the Kentucky Oaks. This year's Oaks winner, Untapable, completed the Oaks-Breeders' Cup Distaff double to cap off an outstanding and dominant season, winning seven of her eight races.
So is there an Untapable in this year's 2-year-old filly crop? There are many races between now and May 1, though Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Take Charge Brandi as well as runner-up Top Decile and Darley Alcibiades winner Peace and War hope to have something to say come Oaks day.
The Kentucky Oaks brings together the best 3-year-old fillies in the country to square off over 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. But not just any filly can enter - in a system inaugurated by the track in 2012, fillies begin earning points toward the Oaks starting gate in the fall of their 2-year-old season by competing in races on the "Road to the Kentucky Oaks." The 31 designated races award points to the top four finishers, and the major preps are worth more points.
