Chester and Mary Broman's stakes-placed homebred Pauseforthecause will try to secure her first stakes win when she faces an expected nine other New York-bred filly and mare sprinters in the $100,000, seven-furlong La Verdad Stakes Jan. 5 at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the 4-year-old Giant's Causeway filly out of grade 1-placed Spritely, by Touch Gold, earned $178,693 in purses during 2018 from a record of 3-1-4 in nine starts.
After her maiden win Aug. 4, 2017, at Saratoga Race Course, it was a full year—and 10 starts—before Pauseforthecause had a winner's circle picture taken again when she was victorious in an Aug. 17 off-the-turf allowance sprint at Saratoga. That victory was the start of a good stretch that includes a 5 1/4-length win in a Sept. 14 optional-claiming allowance at Belmont Park; a strong third in the Iroquois Stakes there—defeated just a length by the in-form Highway Star; and a last-out allowance win from off the pace Dec. 8 at Aqueduct.
"We had a bit of a wind issue that we took care of, not a big surgery … and it has helped her a lot," McLaughlin said. "It was taken care of before she started winning, and she didn't miss any time.
"We also got her back on the dirt going shorter. We thought, because of her pedigree, she'd be turf, but she's better on the dirt. She's doing really well right now, and we think she belongs in this race and has a very good chance."
