Millionaire grade 1 winner Stephen Got Even has died, Lane's End announced Jan. 8. The son of A.P. Indy was 23.
"Stephen Got Even will be greatly missed at the farm and remembered for his kind disposition," read a release from the Kentucky operation, which stood Stephen Got Even from 2001 until he was pensioned in 2015.
Bred by William. S. Farish and W. S. Kilroy, Stephen Got Even was foaled at Lane's End out of the grade 1-placed Cox's Ridge mare Immerse. He sold to Stephen and Tomisue Hilbert for $325,000 at the 1997 Keeneland July Yearling Sale and went on to win the 2000 Donn Handicap (G1) and the 1999 Galleryfurniture.com Stakes (formerly known as the Jim Beam Stakes, G2). He also placed in the 1999 Woodward Stakes (G1).
The first of three black-type winners produced by Immerse, Stephen Got Even was the mare's only graded stakes winner. He compiled a 5-1-1 record from 11 starts and earned $1,019,200.
Stephen Got Even sired 38 black-type stakes winners and 39 black-type-placed performers. His top runners included 2005 champion 2-year-old male Stevie Wonderboy, classic-placed grade 1 winner First Dude , and the late grade 1 winner I Want Revenge. His top runners also include six champions worldwide.
Stephen Got Even's total progeny earnings exceeded $50.5 million and his runners averaged $68,640 per starter. He will be buried at Lane's End.
