Demand for young mares hot off the track continued during the Jan. 9 session of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, with broodmare prospect Stallion Heiress selling for $125,000 to SF Bloodstock & Newgate Farm.
The 5-year-old daughter of Exchange Rate bred in Ontario by Sean Fitzhenry was produced from the grade 3-placed Smart Strike mare Mendocino Beano. She was purchased by Stallionville Enterprises for $100,000 from Keith Lancaster's consignment to the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Trained by Mike Stidham for Stallionaire Enterprises, Stallion Heiress earned $108,687 with her three victories, including the Allen "Black Cat" LaCombe Memorial Overnight Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. She also placed third in the black-type Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. She was purchased by Nathan McCauley for $100,000 at last summer's Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale. In her lone start for the new connections, Premier Racing Club, the mare was unplaced in the Minnesota H. B. P. A. Distaff Stakes at Canterbury Park.
"She's a lovely physical, and she was a very fast filly on the track, so I think she will be great for our program," said Caroline Wilson, who signed the sales receipt on behalf of SF and Newgate. "She was obviously a very talented horse."
"She had a lot of talent, running a 91 Beyer Speed Figure and finishing third in a stake behind Uni (GB), who is a top-class filly," said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency, which consigned the mare as Hip 948. "And she was pretty. A lot of people remember her running. They thought she was going to win some graded stakes, but it didn't turn out for them."
Taylor said the mare's buyers at the HRA sale were taking a shot that she would be able to continue to move up on the track.
"They were hoping to race her and maybe win an additional $50,000 to $100,000, and it didn't pan out for them, but they still got $125,000 for her," Taylor said. "I was pleased. I thought it was a good sale."
