Grade 1 winner and third-crop sire New Year's Day has been relocated to South America after being purchased by prominent Brazilian owner/breeder Luis Felipe Brandão dos Santos.
Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms, New Year's Day was bought by agent Ben Glass on behalf of owners Gary and Mary West for $425,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Bob Baffert trained the son of Street Cry who broke his maiden in his second start and went on to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) by 1 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park. The colt never raced again after the Breeders' Cup World Championships and retired with $1,154,000 in earnings.
New Year's Day entered stud at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in 2014 with a $12,500 fee and stood at the Central Kentucky operation through 2018. He has sired five black-type performers to date, led by winner Yesterday's News, who was second in the Starlet Stakes (G1). His black-type winners include Cafe Du Monde, Canadian Derby (G3) runner-up Day Raider, and Dat Day.
Dos Santos is the owner of Stud Eternamente Rio, which he founded in 1988, and he was involved with a coalition of Brazilian breeders who shuttled Shanghai Bobby in 2014 and 2015. Involved in Thoroughbred racing since 1995, according to Brazilian turf racing website Raia Leve, Dos Santos enjoyed his biggest weekend during the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2017 when he had three group 1 winners—Ekans, Jadir, and Voador Magee.
