The first reported foal by Sequel Stallions New York's first-crop sire Union Jackson is a flashy bay colt out of the Rockport Harbor mare Hoboken Honey that was born Jan. 13 at Sequel.
Bred by Ron Lombardi's Mr. Amore Stables, the Union Jackson foal also is the first produced by Hoboken Honey, who is out of a half sister to Japanese grade 3 winner Daiwa Bandit (by Boston Harbor). The mare's family includes grade 1-placed, multiple graded stakes winner Advancing Star, graded stakes winners and sires Doneraile Court and Darby Fair, and grade 1 winner Excellent Meeting.
"We are so excited about this first crop of Union Jackson and couldn't be happier that the first one belongs to our friends at Mr. Amore Stable," said Sequel Stallion's principal Becky Thomas. "Ron Lombardi visited us yesterday at our annual stallion show, but the mare must not have wanted an audience as she waited until we had gone to have her foal. Ron is a big supporter of the New York breeding program so we are particularly thrilled that he has such a nice Union Jackson colt."
Hoboken Honey will be bred back to Union Jackson this year.
Union Jackson is a multiple stakes-winning son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin and out of grade 1 stakes winner Hot Dixie Chick, who is a half sister to Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Always Dreaming . The stallion was bred in Kentucky by Barbara Banke's Grace Thoroughbred Holdings, campaigned by her Stonestreet Stables, and trained by Steve Asmussen.
After breaking his maiden by 7 3/4 lengths at Keeneland, Union Jackson went on to win an 8 1/4-length score in the Sam Houston Sprint Cup Stakes and a victory in the six-furlong Iowa Sprint Handicap, which he won in 1:08.75. On the board in 9 of 11 starts, he won six races by more than a combined 27 lengths with earnings of $273,000.
Union Jackson is Stonestreet Stables' first stallion to participate in the New York breeding program. Banke stated the she was "very excited to be standing Union Jackson in New York," adding that "Stonestreet very much believes in Union Jackson, and we will be strongly supporting him at stud."
