The first reported Northern Hemisphere foal by Astern was born Jan. 10 at Lyn Burleson's Burleson Farm near Midway, Ky.
Bred by Jack Sims (McKenzie Bloodstock), the filly is out of the six-year-old Tribal Rule mare Desperate Chick, who is a half sister to grade 3 winner and producer Native Bombshell (by War Front ).
"We are very excited about our Astern filly. She has Medaglia d'Oro written all over her," said Lyn Burleson.
The stallion now shuttles from Darley's Kelvinside Farm in New South Wales and is standing this year at Darley's Jonabell farm near Lexington for $15,000.
Astern is the highest-rated son of leading stallion Medaglia d'Oro , who also stands at Darley. Astern earned a Timeform rating of 126 in the De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose (G1), which is the best-ever rating in Australia's top seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds. His rating also is the highest for any son of Medaglia d'Oro in either hemisphere.
"We were already delighted with the early preview we received with Astern's first Australian foals last fall, and if this first foal is any indication we will be very pleased with his crop here as well," said Darren Fox, Darley nominations manager.
Raced by Godolphin, Astern broke his maiden on debut and captured the Uvex Silver Slipper Stakes (G2) and the Widden Kindergarten Stakes (G3). At 3, he captured the MTA Run To The Rose along with the Golden Rose. He ran solid seconds as well in the Coolmore Stud Ascot Vale Stakes (G1) and Star Roman Consul Stakes (G2).
