A filly by Brazen Beau topped Book 2 of the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale Jan. 13 near Brisbane in Eastern Australia.

Offered by Goodwood Farm as Lot 1002, the filly was purchased by Gold Coast-based bloodstock agent Grant Morgan through his Ontrack Thoroughbreds operation for AU$230,000 (US$165,945). Morgan is a big fan of the young Darley stallion that he purchased and syndicated as a yearling.

Sunday's sale-topping filly is the third foal of the winning Exceed And Excel mare Iriomote.

"I thought she was a real 2-year-old type," Morgan said. "I haven't bought many earlier types before, but this filly looks a great chance to be here (in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic) next year. She is from an Exceed And Excel mare and is bred on the same cross as the current Golden Slipper (G1) favorite Tassort.

"I formed a group of clients to purchase a horse for leading Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds, and this is the filly that fit the bill."

Three yearlings sold for AU$160,000 ($115,440)—a Sebring filly from Milburn Creek to Liam Birchley, and two youngsters from KBL Thoroughbreds, a Deep Field colt to Upper Bloodstock and a Better Than Ready filly to Peter Dalziel Professional Horsebreaking.

Almost AU$10 million ($7,138,440) was traded on 155 lots sold for an average price of almost AU$64,000 ($46,054). The clearance rate slipped on last year's record-breaking Book 2 sale to 71.8%.

"There were plenty of great sales today, albeit the market was very selective," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said. "We are disappointed in our clearance rate given there was a good crowd and buying bench in attendance.

"We are thrilled with the week. To eclipse AU$180 million for the first time ever is a testament to the support of both our vendors and buyers and the faith they have in Magic Millions. I would like to congratulate and thank the entire Magic Millions team in making the event another huge success."

Book 3 of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale (34 lots) will be held Jan. 15. It will be followed by the Gold Coast Summer Racehorse Sale (44 lots).
