Five older horses will attempt to land the $100,000 Toboggan Stakes (G3) over seven furlongs at Aqueduct Jan. 19. Skyler's Scramjet drew high weight of 124 pounds off his second in last month’s Gravesend Stakes at the Big A. The Creative Cause gelding won the Tom Fool Handicap (G3) over the track earlier last year and has four wins in seven starts at the Ozone Park oval.
Gold for the King has won four-of-eight at Aqueduct, and was third just behind Skyler’s Scramjet in the Gravesend, which was contested at six furlongs. The New York-bred son of Posse has won multiple stakes at Aqueduct against state-bred company.
Colonel Sharp ships up from Maryland, where he won his last two starts of 2018 at Laurel Park over "good" tracks. He’s taking another crack at graded company after finishing fourth in last autumn’s Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash Stakes (G3). Bal Harbour took the off-the-turf Gio Ponti Stakes at Aqueduct at one mile in November in wire-to-wire fashion after being good enough to score at Keeneland in an allowance optional claimer. He was most recently third in the Queens County Stakes after setting the pace and fading late in that nine-furlong affair. He figures to try and take the Toboggan on the front end.
Solid Wager drew outside in the field. The California-bred last won in the Nov. 18 Cary Grant Stakes against Cal-breds, and came back on New Year’s Day to rally late for third in an allowance optional claimer at Santa Anita. He has hit the board in seven straight starts.
