Blueskiesnrainbows can score a repeat win in the $200,000 Native Diver Handicap (gr. III) Nov. 29, but instead of Hollywood Park, he'll be trying to accomplish it at Del Mar.
Following his win in the Native Diver in the final days at Hollywood before the track's closing, the front-running son of English Channel captured the San Pasqual Stakes (gr. II) in January at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer for Bad Boy Racing and Whizway Farms, the 5-year-old Blueskiesnrainbows went off form after that and is yet to regain it. He faded in his two subsequent starts this spring at Santa Anita—the San Antonio (gr. II) when sixth by 10 1/4 lengths, and the Tokyo City Cup (gr. III), beaten by 14 1/2 lengths when fifth as the favorite.
Following a seven-month break, Blueskiesnrainbows returned in the one-mile Big Bear Stakes Oct. 30, again setting the pace before weakening to seventh and losing by 10 1/4 lengths.
On Saturday, he'll start from the outside post in a field of seven for the 1 1/8-mile Native Diver at Del Mar, where he has not won in two tries over the Polytrack. One of three graded stakes on the card, the Native Diver is race 3 with a scheduled post time of 1:30 p.m. PST.
Rafael Bejarano takes over aboard Blueskiesnrainbows, a lifetime winner of $672,052 while winning seven of 26 starts.
Blueskiesnrainbows was assigned 122 pounds, two fewer than the top-weighted Chilean-bred import Salto Del Indio, a dual grade I winner in his native country last year. Now owned by Litte Red Feather Racing and trained by Mike Puype, the 4-year-old son of Happy Hunting has had just one United States start, running last of seven in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes (gr. I) June 28. Joe Talamo has the riding assignment.
Hollendorfer also enters grade I winner Tamarando, seeking his first victory since the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) in February at Golden Gate Fields. Owned and bred in California by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, the 3-year-old son of Bertrando returned from an absence of nearly six months to finish second in the California Flag Stakes for state-breds Oct. 18.
All four of Tamarando's victories have come over synthetic tracks, including the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) as a 2-year-old. He also broke his maiden at Del Mar prior to his biggest success. Mike Smith has the return call.
Avanzare, who is also entered in Del Mar's Seabiscuit Handicap (gr. IIT) on turf Nov. 28, won his only start over Polytrack, taking the Washington Park Handicap (gr. III) at Arlington International Race Course Aug. 30. Trained by Tom Proctor for owners Donato Lanni and John F. Youngblood, the 4-year-old Grand Reward colt ran third in the City Of Hope (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita Oct. 4 in his most recent start. Gary Stevens has the call.
Argentine grade I winner Big Cazanova, 2-for-2 at Del Mar this summer in allowance/optional claiming company including a record-setting one-mile victory in 1:34.74 July 26, stakes winner Blue Tone, and supplemental entrant Fleet Eagle complete the field.
