Art Sherman, trainer of 2014 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner California Chrome, will be honored Dec. 6 at Golden Gate Fields.
Gates open at 10 a.m. and a limited number of California Chrome posters will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. The featured event Saturday is the $75,000 Gold Rush Stakes for 2-year-olds at one mile on the Tapeta main track.
Sherman called Northern California home from 1968 to 2008, competing at Bay Area racetracks as a jockey and then trainer before relocating to Southern California. At age 77, Sherman became the oldest trainer to win the Kentucky Derby when California Chrome defeated 18 opponents in the world's most famous horse race May 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville.
Post time Saturday is 12:45 p.m. PST and Sherman will be saluted in the winner's circle following the fourth race, which will be run at approximately 2:15 p.m. Fans will then have the opportunity to meet Sherman and get their posters autographed.
"I'm really looking forward to it," said Sherman, who will spend the afternoon in the Golden Gate Fields turf club. "I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends."
Sherman and California Chrome were back in the winner's circle last Saturday at Del Mar after California Chrome scored an authoritative victory in the Hollywood Derby (gr. IT) in his turf debut. With both dirt and turf races around the globe as options, Sherman is gearing up for a big 4-year-old campaign with California Chrome in 2015.
