Apprentice jockey Alexandra Jara suffered a broken collarbone Dec. 3 in a scary spill in which her mount, Princes On Thelake, died in a race at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Jara was riding Princes On Thelake for trainer Eduardo Jones in the fifth race Wednesday when the 4-year-old Here's Zealous filly broke down and fell nearing the quarter pole. Mr Rico Is Valid, with Manuel Franco up, fell over the fallen rival.
Jara reported her injury on her Facebook page and thanked the staff of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for her treatment there. Jara, of Panama, has seven wins, eight seconds, and 25 thirds and purse earnings of $153,563 from 148 mounts this season, which is her first riding in the U.S. She is the sister of Belmont Stakes (gr. I)-winning rider Fernando Jara.
Franco fell off his mount but managed to escape injury and won the day's next race, a maiden special for New York-bred 2-year-olds, aboard Andrews T and S Racing's All Is Number.
Princes On Thelake was euthanized on the track. Mr Rico Is Valid ran off after the fall before being apprehended by an outrider.
