Still Having Fun wins the Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park

Grade 2 winner Still Having Fun and win machine Late Night Pow Wow are among the standout horses entered in a pair of popular grade 3 stakes for sprinters Feb. 16 at Laurel Park.

In his 4-year-old debut, Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Terp Racing's Still Having Fun will face up to 13 other older horses going seven furlongs in the $250,000 General George Stakes (G3). Breeze Easy's Late Night Pow Wow will put her eight-race win streak on the line against an expected 10 other older fillies and mares at seven furlongs in the $250,000 Barbara Fritchie Stakes (G3).

Still Having Fun will get a start to 2019 similar to last year. After the son of Old Fashioned won a pair of stakes in January and February at Laurel, trainer Timothy Keefe eventually sent him to a 13-1 upset victory in the Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun (G2) at Belmont Park. He rallied from 10th to win that seven-furlong race for 3-year-olds.

GENARO: Still Having Fun Makes the Grade in Woody Stephens

Still Having Fun, who in 11 starts last year competed exclusively in stakes races at seven tracks, closed the year with third-place finishes in the Steel Valley Sprint Stakes at Mahoning Valley Race Course and the Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

"It was like no other year I've had. … Not because he's a horse that's made half a million dollars, but he's a horse that, everything he does, he seems to enjoy," Keefe said. "He's taken me to all the big races. He took me to Preakness Day, he took me to Belmont Day, to Travers Day, to the Breeders' Cup, to the little track out in Ohio I never would have gone to before. And to cap off his year out in California … it was definitely something I haven't done before.

"This is the first time I've had a horse … that I can take to different places outside of Maryland and not be 20-1 and have a realistic shot of running a huge race for us. It was great. He logged a little over 10,000 miles of traveling last year, and it doesn't faze him. It absolutely doesn't faze him. He's got a great mental capacity. He takes care of himself."

In the Barbara Fritchie, Late Night Pow Wow will look to extend a winning streak that encompasses five consecutive stakes wins, including a grade 3 score in last year's Charles Town Oaks and stakes wins at Laurel in her past two starts. She is 4-0 at seven furlongs.

Trainer Javier Contreras, who owned Late Night Pow Wow for her first nine starts, marvels at the 4-year-old West Virginia-bred daughter of Fiber Sonde.

"I'm always confident in her," Contreras said. "Races like this are going to draw some decent horses … so she's going to have to earn it. But she's doing very well.

"I don't really want to say I expect her to run the same race as she has been, but I'm hoping she does. She has come into this race as good as she has come to every one of her races. She's been pretty amazing. I'm very excited. I'm always excited to run her. I love watching her run, and, obviously, I love the results. I'd love to win another graded stakes with her."
