Two Jockeys Injured in Spill at Hawthorne

Jockeys Maria Thornton and Carlos Montalvo were taken to Loyola Medical Center after being injured in a spill during the ninth and final race Dec. 4 at Hawthorne Racecourse.
Hurta, an 11-year-old gelding, broke down near the five-sixteenths pole in the $5,000 claiming race at one mile and 70 yards, throwing Thornton to the ground. A second horse, Spectacular Act, tripped over the fallen horse and dislodged Montalvo.
Thornton complained of pain in her right wrist and left hip. Montalvo complained of left shoulder pain.
The track later reported that Thornton has a hematoma on her hip and a small broken bone in her hand. Montalvo sustained a broken collarbone.
Stakes-placed Hurta, trained by Eduardo Rodriguez for a partnership, was euthanized. He won 20 races in 71 starts and earned $275,896.
Spectacular Act was collected by an outrider and left the course under his own power.
