The New York Racing Association announced purse values March 3 for open claiming races will increase, beginning with the March 8 card at Aqueduct Racetrack.
In January, the New York State Gaming Commission formally adopted an amendment allowing racing organizations to apply for adjustments to the purse-to-claim ratio, with the provision that enhanced measures to ensure the soundness and safety of equine athletes are in place.
NYRA applied for—and subsequently received—such an exemption that provides for an adjustment to claiming race purses through March 31.
In addition to the standard level of pre-race safety scrutiny applied to all horses racing at a NYRA track, NYRA will apply an additional secondary level of scrutiny to all horses competing in races with adjusted purse-to-claim ratios.
As of Friday's card at Aqueduct, open claiming races will now be contested at the following purse values:
