International Women's Day was a fitting date for the 4-year-old season debut of Wonder Gadot, the Canadian champion 2-year-old filly named after actress Gal Gadot who starred in "Wonder Woman."
But taking on a field of six other fillies and mares, Wonder Gadot could not get past Go Google Yourself in the stretch of the March 8 optional-claiming allowance at Oaklawn Park, finishing runner-up in the one-mile race.
The effort was the second consecutive victory for Jay Em Ess Stable's Go Google Yourself, who is trained by Paul McGee. The 4-year-old Into Mischief filly now has a record of 4-3-3 from 13 starts.
With Christmas Sky shuffling to the lead, Wonder Gadot settled into fifth after breaking inward slightly. Setting fractions with a quarter-mile going in :23.68 and a half in :47.86, Christmas Sky was followed by Mo's MVP and Go Google Yourself about a length behind.
Go Google Yourself moved up to challenge the leader before coming into the turn, as Wonder Gadot made an outside move from the back of the field up to third. As six furlongs went in 1:12.63, Wonder Gadot took over the lead from Go Google Yourself to her inside.
Wonder Gadot was able to keep a neck in front until Go Google Yourself cut the turn heading into the stretch and opened a short lead on the daughter of Medaglia d'Oro . Go Google Yourself finished 1 1/4 lengths in front of the Mark Casse-trained Wonder Gadot, with Clever Serve getting up for third. The final time over a fast track was 1:37.59.
"I thought she ran well. This race will move her forward," Casse said of Wonder Gadot. "We'll see. The (grade 1) Apple Blossom is still a possibility."
Bred in Kentucky by Samantha Siegel of Jay Em Ess Stable, Go Google Yourself is out of the Deputy Minister mare Taunt, who has produced six other winners from eight foals to race.
