Leading Laurel Rider McCarthy Breaks Wrist

Leading Laurel Park jockey Trevor McCarthy sustained a broken right wrist when he was unseated after his mount swerved to miss a fallen horse as both were galloping out following the second race Dec. 20.
McCarthy's agent, Scott Silver, who transported the rider to the hospital, confirmed the injury.
The fallen horse, Hugger of Trees, won the $10,000 claiming race at seven furlongs over the main track but tripped and fell after crossing the wire. The 4-year-old filly, trained by owner Robert Gamber, was able to get to her feet, walk onto a van, and leave the racetrack.
According to the Laurel Park publicity office, Christian Santiago Reyes, the rider of Hugger of Trees, was not injured. He had no more mounts scheduled on the Saturday card.
McCarthy's mount, second-place finisher Vente Latte, was caught by outriders and returned to the paddock.
With 263 winners this year, McCarthy ranks sixth among leading riders in North America, and he is 19th in earnings with more than $8.1 million.
The 20-year-old native of Wilmington, Del., has already wrapped up all three leading rider titles in Maryland this year (Laurel winter, Pimlico spring, and Laurel fall) with only three days left on the 2014 racing calendar.
