Medaglia d'Oro at Darley

Darley's Medaglia d'Oro  lost little of the luster he enjoyed during last year's juvenile sales as evidenced by his top spot by average following the two-day Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

The 20-year-old son of El Prado led the March sire standings with an average of $575,000 for two sold from as many offered. His top price was a $900,000 colt consigned by King's Equine that was bought by D.J. Stable and Cash is King, the same co-owners that campaigned 2018 champion 2-year-old filly Jaywalk. Medaglia d'Oro's other seller was a $250,000 private sale, also consigned by King's Equine, and was acquired by agent Kim Valerio.

Last year, Medaglia d'Oro was represented by three seven-figure juvenile sales, with two bringing $1.2 million—a filly out of Mi Vida that sold at The Gulfstream Sale, and a colt out of Tapicat at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The third million-dollar-plus sale came in the OBS Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale when a filly out of Wilshewed brought $1.1 million.

Medaglia d'Oro's juvenile average in 2018 was $589,375 from eight sold.

Darley scored a double among the leading OBS March sires with Bernardini  ranking second by average at $557,500 from two sold from two offered.

King's Equine, again, sold the top-priced Bernardini juvenile, a colt out of Canadian champion Inish Glora that worked a furlong in :09 4/5 during the under tack show and then sold for $825,000 to Phoenix Thoroughbreds. Eisaman Equine sold the other Bernardini 2-year-old, a filly out of Always a Princess that Martin Anthony bought for $290,000. The filly worked a furlong in :10.

Ashford Stud's American Pharoah  led the first-crop sire standings as he has since his first foals were offered at auction as weanlings. The 2015 Triple Crown winner was represented by three sold from six offered that averaged $458,333. His top seller was a $600,000 filly out of Flattermewithroses that de Meric Sales consigned as agent. Emmanuel de Seroux's Narvick International bought the filly on behalf of Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud. The filly worked a quarter-mile in :20 4/5 during the under tack show.

With a reputation for runners prone to turf and distance, Lane's End's Lemon Drop Kid  surprised as the fourth-leading OBS March sire by average at $437,500. The son of Kingmambo was represented by two sold out of three offered. Both of his progeny sold for $400,000 or higher. His top price was a $475,000 colt out of the stakes-placed Unbridled's Song mare Queenie's Song. The colt was consigned by Eddie Woods as agent and sold to agent Lane's End Bloodstock on behalf of West Point Thoroughbreds and Al Frassetto.
