Aqueduct's April 5, $150,000 Distaff Handicap (G3), to be run the day before the track's stakes-packed Wood Memorial Presented by NYRA Bets (G2) card, has a "Holiday" feel despite being run on a Friday afternoon.
Heading the field of nine older runners is Lady Sheila Stable's Holiday Disguise, a 5-year-old Harlan's Holiday mare who was named 2018 champion New York-bred female sprinter and older dirt female April 1 in Saratoga Springs. In fact, five of the runners are products of the New York state breeding program.
Bred by Dr. Bill Wilmot and Dr. Joan Taylor, Holiday Disguise won last year's Distaff by a length. In her lone start of the year she rallied from eighth early to win the Feb. 16 Broadway Stakes for state-breds by 4 1/4 lengths, earning a 100 Equibase Speed Figure for the six furlongs. Adding an extra furlong here should suit as she's three-for-three at the specialty distance.
Linda Rice trains Holiday Disguise, as well as Split Time, and Startwithsilver, another state-bred who comes to the Distaff on short notice. The Jump Start mare edged Yorkiepoo Princess by a neck in the March 16 Correction Stakes at six panels. Startwithsilver was fifth in the Broadway.
Lawrence Goichman's Kathryn the Wise, a New York-bred by Uncle Mo , smoked seven furlongs in 1:25.22 Jan. 5 while taking the La Verdad Stakes by 10 3/4 lengths.
