Dortmund, the early favorite for the 2015 spring classics, drilled a half mile at Santa Anita Park Jan. 4 in his first workout since winning the Los Alamitos Futurity (gr. I) Dec. 20.
Trained by Bob Baffert, the son of Big Brown worked in company with maiden Wabel, getting a time of :48 3/5 handily with Martin Garcia aboard. The move ranked 23rd of 74 at the distance. Wabel was also clocked in :48 3/5.
Owned by Kaleem Shah, Dortmund has three wins from as many starts. Prior to his rousing head victory as the 3-5 favorite in the Los Alamitos Futurity, he was made the individual favorite at 9-1 in the first 2015 Kentucky Derby Future Wager off his first two career starts. He won an allowance/optional claiming race by 7 3/4 lengths at Churchill Downs Nov. 29 after taking his debut 4 3/4 lengths Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
Baffert said that FrontRunner Stakes (gr. I) and Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) winner American Pharoah, a leading contender for the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male of 2014, is scheduled to begin working for his return to the races late this month. Zayat Stables' homebred son of Pioneerof the Nile was withdrawn from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) because of a problem in his left front foot.
