Bowie's Hero

The connections of Bowies Hero hope a change of scenery and some class relief help the grade 1 winner get the 2019 season off on the right foot when he faces an expected nine other rivals in the $250,000 San Francisco Mile Stakes (G3T) April 27 on the grass at Golden Gate Fields.

Bowies Hero reached a career high (so far) last season when he rallied from fifth to score a half-length victory in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1T) in March on the turf at Santa Anita Park. After that effort, the son of Artie Schiller went off form, finishing off the board in his final three starts of the season—all in grade 1 or grade 2 stakes.

In preparation for the horse's 5-year-old season debut, trainer Philip D'Amato has worked Bowies Hero regularly since late February, initially at San Luis Rey Training Center and more recently on the training track at Santa Anita.

Agave Racing Stable, ERJ Racing, and Madaket Stables' Bowies Hero has compiled a 6-1-2 record from 16 starts with earnings of $664,670.

Bowies Hero will start from the inside Saturday while morning-line second choice River Boyne drew the outside post. Trained by Jeff Mullins for Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal, River Boyne enters off a fourth-place finish in the Kilroe Mile.

The San Francisco Mile is one of six stakes scheduled for Golden Gate Saturday. In the other races:

•    Reddam Racing and Ciaran Dunne's Sold It, fifth in last year's Starlet Stakes (G1) at Los Alamitos Racecourse, will try for her first stakes win in the $75,000 California Oaks for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the all-weather main track.

•    In the $75,000 Golden Poppy Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf, Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal's Zaffinah enters off back-to-back grade 3 placings on the turf at Santa Anita this season.

•    In the $75,000 Lost in the Fog Stakes for older sprinters on the main track, Peter Redekop B.C.'s Anyportinastorm will try to improve on his third-place finish in last year's edition of this six-furlong race.

•    In the $100,000 California Derby, Del Secco DCS Racing's Sparky Ville makes his first start since his narrow victory in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) Feb. 10 at Santa Anita. After winning that seven-furlong race, the Candy Ride  gelding will stretch out to his longest start to date in the 1 1/16-mile race on the main track.

•    Fillies and mares sprinting on the turf will take the spotlight in the $75,000 Camilla Urso Stakes, where Nicholas Alexander's S Y Sky enters off a runner-up finish in the Irish O'Brien Stakes sprinting down the hill March 31 at Santa Anita.
