Stephen Brunetti's Red Oak Farm entered into a partnership with Kentucky breeder Newtown Anner Stud on a handsome Tiznow colt hammered down for $420,000 during the opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
The price was third-highest during the April 23 session of the auction, which continues through April 26.
Consigned as Hip 208 by Brick City Thoroughbreds, the colt is out of the unraced Indian Charlie mare Kateri, a daughter of the grade 3-winning Woodman mare Sue's Good News. The mare is the dam of grade 1 winner Tiz Miz Sue and multiple stakes winner Bulletin, victor of the inaugural Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Nov. 2 at Churchill Downs.
The colt was previously offered twice at yearling auctions through Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, going unsold on final bids of $175,000 and $275,000.
"We just loved the colt," said Rick Sacco, Red Oak Stable's racing and operations manager. "He ticked all the boxes. He breezed great, he galloped out great, he scoped great, he vetted clean, and he's a great-moving individual."
The colt breezed a quarter-mile in :21 2/5 during the second under tack show session.
Sacco said the price was in the range the buyers thought they would have to pay. "We had him pegged at between $350,000 and $450,000, depending on who else was on him."
While many offerings at OBS are appealing individuals, Sacco said the colt possessed the traits Red Oak is looking for in its quest to find horses "to compete at the highest level."
Nick Sallusto, who along with Hanzly Albina manages the U.S. bloodstock interests of the Regan family, which owns Newtown Anner, said the colt displayed the form at the sale he had shown at the farm.
"He breezed the way we expected him to breeze," Sallusto said. "He had been doing it at the farm. As people started seeing him (at OBS) his popularity picked up and he showed himself well all week."
Sallusto said the breeders were happy to stay in on the colt for racing purposes.
"To be able to stay in and race is the best of both worlds," he said.
