After a clear victory in an optional-claiming allowance race March 22 at Oaklawn Park, Lookin for Eight will take on an expected five rivals in the $115,000 Champions Day Marathon Overnight Stakes Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance April 30 at Churchill Downs.
Gary Barber, John C. Oxley, Ralph Kinder, and Erv Woolsey's Lookin for Eight, a grade 3 winner on the synthetic surface at Woodbine, will try 1 1/2 miles for the first time after opening the season with a 1 1/2-length score at 1 1/16 miles.
Trained by Mark Casse, Lookin for Eight, a 5-year-old son of Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Lookin At Lucky , has worked twice at Churchill since that season-opening effort, breezing five furlongs April 11 and a half-mile April 23.
The race is featured on a day Churchill Downs will celebrate past Kentucky Derby (G1) winners. This year, the focus of the second annual Churchill Downs Champions Day presented by Twinspires.com will be the 100th anniversary of the Triple Crown.
In addition to a full day of racing, Triple Crown-winning jockeys, trainers, and owners will sign autographs; fans can have their pictures taken with rarely seen Triple Crown memorabilia from the Kentucky Derby Museum's vault; and guests can learn from the best during a special handicapping seminar.
The autograph session—featuring Steve Cauthen, Jean Cruguet, Victor Espinoza, Mike Smith, Bob Baffert, and Elliott Walden—will run from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the plaza.
