Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Stables has found great success racing offspring of Medaglia d'Oro , including Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. During the April 26 final session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, the operation went back to that well, acquiring a filly by the prominent Darley stallion for $825,000.
The filly, consigned as Hip 1111 by Sequel Bloodstock, was bred in Kentucky by Farfellow Farms and Godolphin, and is out of the stakes-placed Aptitude mare Critikal Reason. The dam of stakes winner and grade 1-placed filly Bajan, Critikal Reason is a half sister to Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Lemons Forever, the dam of champion Forever Unbridled and grade 1 winner Unbridled Forever.
"I think she's quick and looks like she will get a distance of ground," said Stonestreet's agent John Moynihan. "She came out of her breeze (eighth-mile in :09 4/5) well. We just really liked her."
The filly was initially acquired by Al Pike, who assists Sequel's Becky Thomas with purchases, for $172,000 from the Hidden Brook consignment to The October Sale, the season-closing Kentucky yearling sale conducted by Fasig-Tipton.
Thomas said the filly was initially bought on behalf of breeder Lewis Lakin to race, but the decision was made to put her in the OBS sale after several other horses developed issues and were unable to go to market.
"She was uncharacteristically really fast," Thomas said. "She grazed until right before we came in here (to be sold). She's got the greatest mind ever."
