One day before Jason Servis saddles Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) winner Maximum Security in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), the trainer will send out another stable star in World of Trouble for the $250,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint presented by MassMutual (G2T).
Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Bethlehem Stables' World of Trouble enters the 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint May 3 at Churchill Downs off three straight main-track victories, most recently his first grade 1 score when he circled horses on his way to a half-length victory in the Carter Handicap April 6 at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Not that the turf is unfamiliar for 4-year-old World of Trouble. The versatile son of Kantharos last year posted back-to-back stakes wins in turf sprints in New York before finishing second by a neck to Stormy Liberal in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T). In his turf debut last summer at Saratoga Race Course, World of Trouble won the Quick Call Stakes before delivering a 5 3/4-length victory in the Allied Forces Stakes on the turf at Belmont Park.
Those two impressive scores would see World of Trouble sent off as the 2-1 favorite in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, where he would lead throughout before getting edged late by Stormy Liberal, who secured his second straight win in the race. Still, World of Trouble ran well in that 5 1/2-furlong turf race at Churchill, contested on yielding turf. Thunderstorms are in the forecast Friday for Louisville, Ky.
Breaking from the outside in the expected field of nine will be last year's Twin Spires Turf Sprint winner Will Call, who enters off a fifth-place finish after racing wide in the Shakertown Stakes (G2T) April 6 at Keeneland. That 5 1/2-furlong turf test served as the seasonal debut for Will Call, a 5-year-old son of Country Day campaigned by Klein Racing and Madaket Stables.
Trained by Brad Cox, Will Call has won two of three starts on the Churchill turf. Last year's Twin Spires Turf Sprint, which was contested at five furlongs, saw Will Call rally from seventh to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths.
Four other runners from the Shakertown also are entered Friday in runner-up Bound for Nowhere, who moves to the inside post here after starting from post 9 at Keeneland; third-place Angaston, who will try to improve his 2-1-0 record from three starts sprinting on the Churchill course; fourth-place Chaos Theory, and eighth-place Jazzy Times.
Friday's field also includes veteran turf sprinter Undrafted, who has three wins and two seconds from five starts on the Churchill course.
The popular son of Purim will be making his 9-year-old debut after closing out 2018 with a half-length victory at the Twin Spires Turf Sprint distance at Churchill. In that allowance race, Wes Welker and Elizabeth Kumin's Undrafted closed from eighth early on the yielding turf.
