Shadwell Stable's Haikal is being treated for a foot abscess. His status for the May 4 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) is in doubt.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin reported the Daaher  colt has a foot abscess in his left front. The horse did not go to the track this morning.

McLaughlin said Haikal will continue to be treated by soaking in Epsom salts May 2. Saw it as an issue in the late morning May 1.

"It's a quick recovery, but it might not be quick enough because we have to make a decision by tomorrow morning," McLaughlin said. "He has to train for us to be comfortable with him and if he can't train because he's still sore in the foot, then he'll be out."

McLaughlin confirmed a decision will be made by 8 a.m. Friday. Scratch time is 9 a.m.

"We'll get to work here and see what happens," McLaughlin said.

Haikal, out of the Distorted Humor  mare Sablah is the winner of March 9 Gotham Stakes (G3). He was third in the Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G2).
