Fletcher and Carolyn Gray's homebred I'm a Chatterbox got the early lead from the rail and never looked back while romping by eight lengths in the Jan. 17 Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. The 3-year-old daughter of Munnings covered the mile and 70 yards in 1:43.21 .
The Silverbulletday is the first step on Fair Grounds' road to the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I). The next step is the $175,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 21 at 1 1/16 miles and the $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) March 28 taking the same trip.
I'm a Chatterbox, a leggy chestnut out of the stakes-winning Lost Soldier mare Chit Chatter, broke alertly in the Silverbulletday and was gunned for the lead as several of the sophomore fillies tried to get early position. Seven of the nine were in early contention as they rounded the first bend after an opening-quarter mile in :23.43. Giving chase was Divine Dawn, Money'soncharlotte, and Forever Unbridled. Top Decile, the 4-5 favorite in the field, trailed early until making a mild bid heading into the far turn.
I'm a Chatterbox, making her first start for trainer Larry Jones, got the half-mile in :47.93 while being tracked by Divine Dawn and Money'soncharlotte, and spurted away from the field after six furlongs in 1:12.92. Sent off the 8-1 fourth choice, I'm a Chatterbox was well clear in the lane after a mile in 1:38.81 and coasted clear to the line.
"I had her in a good spot; she was moving easily and got to the front easy," Geroux said. "She was going pretty fast but she had plenty in the tank left down the lane."
Charles Fipke's well-bred Forever Unbridled (Unbridled's Song—Lemons Forever) rallied for second, topping Money'soncharlotte by a head for the runner-up spot.
"She ran boldly," said Brian Hernandez Jr., who was aboard Forever Unbridled. "I thought she ran an incredible race. She is coming forward and she ran big. We had a great trip outside in the clear the whole way and our filly loomed up there turning for home and she ran incredible race for it being only her third run."
Forever Unbridled broke her maiden at Fair Grounds Dec. 12 at the same mile, 70-yard distance.
I'm a Chatterbox was making her 2015 debut in the Silverbulletday and had shown class in her three starts at 2 last year. She broke her maiden at Keeneland first time out going seven furlongs, then was third in an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs in her two-turn debut in early November. She finished up the season with a fourth-place effort behind Silverbulletday second choice West Coast Belle in the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) under the Twin Spires.
"This was our first time running her because she was coming from another barn, but I didn't have any game plan," said Jones, who took over the winner's training from Ken McPeek. "I told Florent, 'Ride her like you own her and need the money really bad.' "
I'm a Chatterbox now has two wins and a third from four starts and has earned $123,614. She returned $19.20, $9.40, and $6 while Forever Unbridled paid $6 and $4.60 with Money'soncharlotte returning $6.60. The $2 exacta (1-5) paid $117.20 and the $1 trifecta (1-5-4) paid $707.10.
West Coast Belle was fourth and was followed by Divine Dawn, Top Decile, Queen's Ready, Zooming, and Slava.
