Bourbon War, the runner up in the Xpressbet Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), is likely to start in the Preakness Stakes (G1), according to owner Mike McMahon of Bourbon Lane Stable.
"We're leaning toward running in the Preakness. We're not scared of anyone coming out of the Kentucky Derby," McMahon said. "It looks like the Preakness is the time to take them on."
Bourbon War is owned by Bourbon Lane Stable and Lake Star Stable.
Bourbon War, a 3-year-old son of Tapit , followed up the Fountain of Youth with a fourth-place finish in the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park and wound up with 31 qualifying points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) series, missing the cutoff to compete in the opening leg of the Triple Crown. He was 25th in the race for 20 spots in the Run of the Roses.
Trained by Mark Hennig, Bourbon War was also fourth in the Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Bodexpress, a maiden who was second in the Florida Derby, was the final Kentucky Derby qualifier with 40 points.
The first foal of the grade 1-winning Artie Schiller mare My Conquestadory, Bourbon War was bought for $410,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale from the Conquest Stable dispersal. He was an RNA for $525,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
