A year ago Vettori Kin gave trainer Ken McPeek his fifth victory in the Louisville Handicap (G3T).
On May 18 at Churchill Downs, McPeek and Vettori Kin are back for more in the $100,000 Louisville as the son of Vettori aims to defend his title while the trainer seeks his sixth score in the 1 1/2-mile turf test for 3-year-olds and older.
Racing for Fern Circle Stables, Stud TNT, and Julio Gerin de Almeida Camargo's Old Friends, Vettori Kin will need to get back on track as he enters off a fifth-place finish in the Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes (G2T) April 20 at Keeneland. That effort marked his fifth straight off-the-board finish dating back to last year's Louisville, a stretch that did include a fourth-place finish in the United Nations Stakes (G1T) at Monmouth Park.
The expected field of seven includes Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Head of Plains Partners' Shahroze, who opened 2019 with a second-place finish in an April 20 allowance race at Keeneland. That 5-year-old debut for the gelded son of Holy Roman Emperor followed a 2018 season in which he won two of three starts, including a two-length score in the Singspiel Stakes (G3T) at Woodbine. Shahroze is trained by Graham Motion.
In that April 20 allowance race at Keeneland, Shahroze finished second to veteran Sierra Farm homebred Nessy, who also is entered in the Louisville. A 6-year-old gelded son of Flower Alley, Nessy, trained by Ian Wilkes, will aim for the second graded stakes win of his career. He has won or placed in graded stakes four times.
