With the track at the Maryland State Fairgrounds continuing to dry out from recent rains, workout times were a little zippier during the second under tack show session May 15 for next week's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
There was a new fastest time of :10 for an eighth-mile work, and six individuals shared the new quarter-mile fastest work time of :21 3/5. The under tack show in preparation for the May 20-21 sale in Timonium, Md., concludes Thursday with a session beginning at 8 a.m. ET.
During Tuesday's first session, delayed by two hours so the track could be readied after rain over the weekend and throughout Monday, the fastest times were :10 1/5 and :21 4/5 for an eighth-mile and quarter-mile, respectively.
With near-perfect weather conditions of bountiful sunshine and a steady breeze, Wednesday's under tack session was uneventful for the most part. While one horse dumped its rider and ran off, both emerged unscathed.
The fastest eighth-mile worker was Hip 360, an Into Mischief filly from the consignment of agent Bobby Dodd. The bay filly was produced from the stakes-placed Kafwain mare Peggy Jane and descends from the female family of Canadian champion Dynamic Sky. She was purchased by Grand Oaks, agent, for $220,000 from Summerfield, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised, at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Dodd, who has 19 horses cataloged for the auction (a number that reflects outs through Wednesday), said the filly is the fastest of the group he has at Timonium.
"She's always been fast; she's the best one in this sale for me," Dodd said. "She's a good-minded, big strong filly and has a quick turn of foot. She's not a typical Into Mischief when it comes to looks. She has a beautiful head and neck, and she is plenty correct."
Consignor Nick de Meric said there were few surprises among his horses that breezed Wednesday, with a Bayern colt (Hip 355) from his group that had the co-fastest quarter-mile breeze. Out of the stakes-placed mare Pardonmecomingthru, the colt was bred in Kentucky by Michael T. Barnett and purchased by de Meric for $100,000 from Blackburn Farm at the 2018 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.
"We've had him on the farm since he was a weanling, and he's been as straightforward and honest of a colt as we've had all winter," the horseman said. "He's been training well at home. I'm delighted but not surprised by it. For the most part, they've been doing what we expected. The faster horses have been working well over this track, and even yesterday when the track wasn't flattering to a lot of them, we had a couple of nice works. They do start to separate themselves a little more at this time of the year."
Kip Elser of Kirkwood Stables was among the consignors who gave a thumbs-up to the track maintenance crew, noting how they've maintained a safe, consistent track as sale horses underwent pre-under tack show training and the breeze show itself.
"Over the last two weeks, they've done a great job keeping the track safe," said Kirkwood, who sent out a Union Rags —Isabelle's Thunder (by Mineshaft ) colt (Hip 213) to share the day's top quarter-mile breeze.
The other :21 3/5 quarter-mile workers were:
