Of the 600 juveniles cataloged for the upcoming Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, 494 have gone through a sales ring at least once previously, a figure that indicates the importance of pinhooks to the sale.
Scheduled for May 20-21, the Monday and Tuesday following the May 18 Preakness Stakes (G1) at nearby Pimlico Race Course, the sale at the Maryland State Fairgrounds near Timonium, Md., begins at 11 a.m. EDT daily.
The 494 pinhook prospects include 341 that were previously sold—with the remainder having been bought back after not meeting their reserve—with 19 RNAs from previous 2-year-olds in training sales this year.
The most expensive previously purchased juvenile cataloged in the Midlantic sale is Hip 67, a bay Ghostzapper filly that was purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $1,025,000 from the Woods Edge Farm consignment to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Consignor Eddie Woods said the filly, which was entered and withdrawn from The Gulfstream Sale, has also been withdrawn from the Midlantic sale.
Next on the pinhook prospects' list is Hip 17, a Bayern filly purchased by Hartley/DeRenzo for $600,000 at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected yearling sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The filly, named American Model, was bred in Kentucky by Kaleem Shah and is out of grade 2-placed American Story, a daughter of Ghostzapper who has also produced two-time grade 1 winner American Gal and stakes winner Americanize.
"It's a lot for a pinhook," Randy Hartley said of the filly's price tag shortly after purchasing her in Saratoga, "but those kinds of pedigrees don't get offered that much at a 2-year-olds in training sale. Bayern was a Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner. He was a great racehorse. Obviously, her mother can produce, and it seems like the female family can just produce out of anything. That was added value to us. We're such firm believers in mares."
