Multiple sources in South America have confirmed that Stud Eternamente Rio in Brazil has made a deal to sell grade 1 winner and third-crop sire New Year's Day to a farm in Japan.

While some paperwork is still pending, sources said the sale is essentially done. The Japanese farm that bought the stallion was not identified.

New Year's Day is the sire of Maximum Security, who crossed the wire first in the May 4 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) but was disqualified for interference. Prior to the Derby, Maximum Security won the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) for owners/breeders Gary and Mary West. The sophomore has won four of his five starts and earned $649,400.

The Wests also campaigned New Year's Day, whom they acquired at the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale through their agent Ben Glass for $425,000 from Clearsky Farms, which bred the colt. New Year's Day was a shooting star at 2 with trainer Bob Baffert, placing third in his first start and then winning his second start by 1 3/4 lengths. At the quarter pole of his maiden win, he easily opened a 3 1/2-length lead, then coasted to the wire. His performance earned him a shot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), which he won by 1 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park. He was retired after the Breeders' Cup with $1,154,000 in earnings.

An 8-year-old son of Street Cry, New Year's Day entered stud at Hill 'n' Dale Farms near Lexington, where he stood for five seasons. His book size peaked at 98 mares in 2015 and averaged 65 mares over the five years. He last stood for $5,000.

New Year's Day was a top-10 freshman sire in 2017, with 12 winners and two black-type runners, led by Yesterday's News, who was runner-up in the Starlet Stakes (G1).

Year to date, New Year's Day has sired six black-type winners. Besides Maximum Security, they are grade 3 winner Bourbon Resolution, Café Du Monde, grade 3-placed stakes winner Day Raider, Parade of Roses, and Dat Day. His progeny have earned $3,762,220 and average $42,753 per starter.

New Year's Day was sold in 2018 to prominent owner/breeder Luis Felipe Brandão dos Santos, who founded Stud Eternamente Rio in 1988 and was involved with a coalition of Brazilian breeders who shuttled Shanghai Bobby in 2014 and 2015
