Blue Star Racing in Louisiana announced May 7 it will add Breaking Lucky, a graded stakes-winning half brother to the dam of Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Country House, to its stallion roster for 2020.
The farm near Scott, La., bought the millionaire son of Lookin At Lucky prior to the Arkansas Derby (G1) from a racing partnership that included West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R. A. Hill Stable.
Breaking Lucky has been retired.
"We are so excited because we are adding another graded stakes-winning millionaire to our roster," said Blue Star Racing owner Dex Comardelle, who started standing multiple grade 1 winner Real Solution in 2018. He leases the son of Kitten's Joy from Calumet Farm. "This is an opportunity for the breeders in our area to tap into a sire line that is red hot in Lookin At Lucky. You also are tapping into a very deep female family as well."
Ashford Stud's Lookin At Lucky, who won Eclipse champion honors as a 2-year-old and 3-year-old, is also the sire of Accelerate , who won the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and four other grade 1 stakes in 2018 on his way to being named champion older dirt male.
Christine Hayden bred Breaking Lucky in Ontario out of the Sky Classic mare Shooting Party, who she acquired in foal to Langfuhr for $50,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. Shooting Party, a grade 1-placed winner, had already produced two winners from her first two foals to race when she foaled Breaking Lucky. One of those winners was Quake Lake, who would later produce Country House (also by Lookin At Lucky) for owner/breeder Joseph V. "Jerry" Shields Jr.
Breaking Lucky broke his maiden in his second start at 3 and four races later won his first stakes in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Racetrack. At 4, the chestnut colt won his first graded stakes in the Seagram Cup Stakes (G3) at Woodbine and placed in four other graded stakes, including a runner-up effort in the Clark Handicap (G1) to eventual 2017 Horse of the Year and champion older dirt male Gun Runner.
Breaking Lucky retired with a 4-6-6 record out of 27 starts and earnings of $1,196,376.
"He is a great physical with a tremendous race record whose pedigree really stood out," Comardelle said. Quake Lake, who died during foaling in 2016, produced three winners from as many to race, including two black-type winners. On the same day Country House finished second in the Feb 16 Risen Star Stakes presented by Lamarque Ford (G2), his half sister Mitchell Road (by English Channel ) won the Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
"When I started looking at Breaking Lucky, you had Country House on the Derby trail, and he just continued his rise,” said Comardelle.
Comardelle said a fee for Breaking Lucky will be announced at a later date.
