Chicago native and Thoroughbred breeder/owner Philip Teinowitz passed away May 5 at the age of 92. He owned and raced horses since 1956.
Teinowitz owned a coupled entry of Royal Leverage and On the Money in the 1971 Kentucky Derby, finishing behind Canonero II. His Illinois Derby (G3) winner Flag Officer raced against eventual Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew in the 1977 Kentucky Derby (G1). And his multiple grade 1 winner Cryptoclearance placed fourth behind Alysheba in the 1987 Kentucky Derby. Cryptoclearance won four grade 1 stakes, including the 1987 Florida Derby, and was third in the Preakness Stakes (G1) and second in the Belmont Stakes (G1). Cryptoclearance earned more than $3.3 million.
Teinowitz also retained sole ownership of, and stood, Cryptoclearance at stud in Kentucky for his entire stallion career. Cryptoclearance has had a major impact on the breed as the grandsire of Candy Ride and is great-grandsire of 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner . He also sired Belmont winner Victory Gallop and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Volponi.
Teinowitz owned Strategic Maneuver from Cryptoclearance's first crop. Strategic Maneuver won the Spinaway Stakes (G1), Matron Stakes (G1), Demoiselle Stakes (G2), and Schuylerville Stakes (G2) at 2 in 1993. Teinowitz also owned Blue Chip Dan, who was one of three horses to compete against Secretariat in the 1973 Arlington Invitational Stakes.
Teinowitz was a pioneer in Chicago's commercial real estate market, having been responsible for developing more than 5 million square feet of skyscrapers in downtown Chicago. His most noteworthy accomplishment was the site assemblage of two full square city blocks in the Chicago Loop, which he sold to the Sears Roebuck Co., and upon which they constructed the Sears Tower, the world's tallest building at that time.
Teinowitz also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, and earned his law degree from The John Marshall Law School.
Teinowitz is survived by his wife, Donna, and children Nancy, Harry, Danny, Billy, and Matthew.
