Eddie Haskell wins an allowance race over Stormy Liberal at Santa Anita

Saturday's Daytona Stakes (G3T) will be run at five furlongs on the turf at Santa Anita Park as opposed to the 6 1/2-furlong trip the race used to be before use of the Hillside Turf Course was put on hiatus. With that in mind, handicapping the race comes down to which horses have already proved adept at the distance.

Jim Hailey and Phillip Wood's Eddie Haskell, a six-time winner at five panels on the turf, including two decisive scores last fall at Del Mar, and Flawless Racing, Brian Flanagan, and Michael Jarvis' Brandothebartender, a winner of last fall's California Flag Handicap from off the pace, figure to draw the lion's share of the attention.

Both are off-the-pace types. Eddie Haskell closed from fourth to win a Feb. 22 allowance by a head over grade 1-winning sprinter Stormy Liberal. He then closed from fourth to top Brandothebartender, but ultimately finish second, in the March 31 Sensational Star Stakes for state-breds.

Brandothebartender came from last in the Sensational Star and closed from fifth to finish third again in the April 27 Crystal Waters Stakes for Cal-breds. Without a lot of speed in the Daytona—at least on paper—expect these two closers to be closer to the pace.

The pace should belong to Beerman Family Trust, Sayjay Racing, and Greg Hall's What'sontheagenda who will break from the outside post in the seven-horse field under Agapito Delgadillo. Sharp on the lead in down-the-hill races, the son of Dialed In  shipped to Kentucky but tired over a yielding course at Keeneland.

Grade 3 winner Kanthaka will be making his turf bow in the Daytona. Winner of last year's Laz Barrera Stakes (G3) at seven furlongs, the 4-year-old son of Jimmy Creed  was last seen April 20, finishing fourth in the Kona Gold Stakes (G2).
