Break Even wins the Eight Belles at Churchill Downs

Klein Racing's Break Even, a lightening quick daughter of Country Day, brings her unbeaten mark to New York's Belmont Park June 9 for the $150,000 Jersey Girl Stakes at six furlongs.

Her connections, breeder/owner Richard Klein and trainer Brad Cox, are using the race as a possible springboard for Saratoga Race Course's Longines Test Stakes (G1) in early August.

Break Even turned heads May 3 at Churchill Downs when she blazed through an opening half-mile in :44.14 in the Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Derby City Gaming (G2) and kept going. She won the seven-furlong contest by 5 1/2 lengths "unchallenged" according to the Equibase chart call.

Her sire, Country Day (by Speightstown ), raced for the Klein family, winning three sprint stakes and was second in the 2011 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G2T). Break Even's dam, Exotic Wager, is also the dam of two runners who have set track records at 4 1/2 furlongs and seven furlongs.

Break Even will face only four in the Jersey Girl, but it won't be easy. Wayne, Bryan, and Gray Lyster's Bingwa, a Belmont allowance winner May 19 for trainer Wesley Ward, figures to be a strong challenger. The 3-year-old Goldencents  filly is out of Fancy Deed and is a half sister to sharp turf sprinter Bound for Nowhere. Fancy Deed is a half sister to sprint champion Midnight Lute .

Also in the cast is Richard Nicolai's Sue's Fortune. The New York-bred champion 2-year-old filly of 2018 won last year's Adirondack Stakes (G2) at Saratoga and tuned up for the Jersey Girl with a two-length allowance score May 18 going 6 1/2 furlongs at Belmont. Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Moonlight Romance, a wire-to-wire winner last time out at Keeneland, also won last fall's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes under Ward's tutelage. Miss Imperial has placed in three stakes.
