Gee She Sparkles breaks her maiden at Lone Star Park

Spendthrift Farm's freshman sire Race Day  was represented by his first winner June 15 when his 2-year-old filly Gee She Sparkles won a maiden special weight on debut at Lone Star Park.

Campaigned by owners GFB Racing and trainer Danny Pish, the gray filly took over on the turn of a five-furlong test and drew away with authority in the stretch, widening her margin with every stride to win going away by 10 1/2 lengths. She stopped the clock in :59.56 over a fast main track.

Bred in Texas by Inside Move, Gee She Sparkles is out of the Indian Charlie mare Pata Fresca.

Race Day retired to Spendthrift with six career wins including his biggest in the 2015 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and a track record-setting performance that year in the Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. By leading sire Tapit , Race Day hails from the More Than Ready  mare Rebalite, a half sister to four-time grade 1 winner Lite Light, who captured the Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Race Day has been well represented at the sales with his first-crop 2-year-olds. Earlier this week, his top colt sold for $170,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. In early spring of this year, his top filly sold for $170,000 at the OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Now named Josie, she was second on debut June 7 in a maiden special weight at Churchill Downs.

Race Day stands for a $6,000 stands and nurses fee, and is one of six freshman sires in the "Safe Bet" program—Spendthrift's new breeding program for 2019.
