Faraway Kitten Aims for Stakes Win in Mystic Lake Derby

Faraway Kitten wins an allowance race at Keeneland
Stakes-placed Faraway Kitten will take aim at his first stakes win when he faces an expected seven other 3-year-olds in the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby June 22 at Canterbury Park.
The Mystic Lake Derby, at one mile on the turf, is one of five stakes scheduled for Saturday's Canterbury card.
A homebred for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Faraway Kitten won his career debut on the all-weather surface at Woodbine in August 2018 and this year earned a stakes-placing on the synthetic surface at Turfway Park when he finished third in the DRF Bets Rushaway Stakes. An allowance winner at Keeneland on turf, the son of Kitten's Joy enters off a third-place finish in a June 2 allowance/optional claimer at Churchill Downs and will start from the inside Saturday.
Faraway Kitten is one of two horses entered in the Mystic Lake Derby by trainer Mike Maker, who also plans to send out Three Diamonds Farm and Joseph Besecker's Dunph, who won last year's non-black-type Spendthrift Juvenile Stallion Stakes on the dirt at Churchill. The son of Temple City enters Saturday's race off a sixth-place finish in the June 1 Tale of the Cat Stakes on the Monmouth Park turf, after leading that 1 1/16-mile race early.
Two starts back on dirt Dunph finished seventh in the Pat Day Mile Stakes presented by LG&E and KU (G3), which has proven to be a key race. Winner Mr. Money since won the Matt Winn Stakes (G3), runner-up Hog Creek Hustle won the Woody Stephens Stakes (G1), and fifth-place Everfast was runner-up in the Preakness Stakes (G1).
In Saturday's other stakes at Canterbury:
- Grade 2 winner Hotshot Anna, who closed out 2018 with four straight wins, will open her 5-year-old season when the Trappe Shot mare takes on an expected eight other fillies and mares in the $50,000 Hoist Her Flag Stakes, at six furlongs;
- The $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes for fillies and mares at one mile on the turf will see grade 2 winner Goodyearforroses get some class relief after finishing off the board in three graded stakes to start her 7-year-old season;
- In the $100,000 Mystic Lake Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds and older on turf, Terry Hamilton's Spooky Channel will try for a sixth straight win in his first start away from Turf Paradise, where the son of English Channel has won three non-black-type stakes and two allowance races;
- Grade 3 winner The Tabulator, who finished fifth in the 2017 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), won his 2019 debut and now the son of Dialed In returns to stakes competition in the $50,000 Dark Star Cup Stakes for 3-year-olds and older at 6 1/2 furlongs.
