The turf course at Turf Paradise is getting a high-tech makeover, the Arizona racetrack announced July 2.

Polypropylene fibers are being added to half of the seven-eighths of a mile course, from the finish line through the clubhouse turn to the backstretch.

The Polypropylene consists of fine fibers which resemble small, compact ribbons when installed. When added to the turf course they form a net-like structure for the roots of grass. The grass then grows more securely than it would in traditional soil. The Polypropylene secures the grass, keeping it in place and allowing it to better withstand the rigors of horse racing. It also provides a more stable surface on which to race.

The overall result of the Polypropylene netting should be a safer track and more opportunities to race on the turf course. Over 2,600 pounds of polymer have been installed.

"After seeing a dramatic decrease in breakdowns last year, we continue our efforts to not only reduce equine fatalities but to get that number to zero," said Turf Paradise general manager Vince Francia. "Whether it's on the dirt or on the turf, we will avail ourselves to proven safety solutions such as this."
