From a limited first crop of five named foals, Murmur Farm's Hangover Kid has nabbed his first winner from his first starter.
Miss J McKay took command midway through a 5 1/2-furlong waiver maiden claiming race July 5 at Laurel Park and won by a widening 5 1/4 lengths. She stopped the timer in 1:04.61.
Bred in Maryland by Linda Oliff Rohleder, Miss J McKay was sold for $1,500 as a weanling by Bill Reightler through the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale to DR Investments and was then pinhooked through the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale for $55,000 to Maxis Stable out of the Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services consignment.
Costanzo Sales offered the filly at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, but she was bought back on a final bid of $85,000. Maxis Stable then sent her to trainer Cathal Lynch.
Miss J McKay is also the first starter for her dam, Ballykiss, a daughter of Street Boss who failed to hit the board in five career starts. The mare is a half sister to stakes-placed winners Xtra Heart (by Favorite Trick) and Honour Old Glory (Honour and Glory). Ballykiss had a filly this year by freshman sire Imagining .
Hangover Kid is a grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner by Lemon Drop Kid who was bred and campaigned by Steve Taglienti, who races under the banner of Four Tags Stable. The colt won the 2014 Bowling Green Handicap (G2T) at Belmont Park and was third in the 2013 United Nations Stakes (G1T). He retired with a 7-7-3 record out of 26 starts and earned $643,203. He entered stud at Murmur Farm in 2016 and stood there for $2,500 this year.
