Jockey Alex Cintron captured his 1,000th career win July 8 at Delaware Park when he guided Dennis Johnson's homebred Lorden's Love to victory in the fourth race. The milestone came shortly after Cintron recorded his first grade 1-winning ride aboard David Palmer's Wet Your Whistle in the June 29 Highlander Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine.
Cintron and Lorden's Love broke third in Monday's 5 1/2-furlong event. The pair gradually moved up to second between horses before securing a half-length victory over the pacesetter. Lorden's Love hit the wire in 1:07.17 on a sloppy main track, besting four rivals.
Scott Lake, Delaware Park's former leading trainer, conditions the 3-year-old Stephen Got Even filly, who returned $15.40 on a $2 win
Cintron also won Delaware's first race Monday with P. Dale Ladner's Jack the Umpire. The 2-year-old Bodemeister colt, trained by Brett Brinkman, was making his career debut.
Cintron was Delaware Park's leading rider in 2013 with 98 winners. The 31-year-old native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, also rode his first graded stakes winner during that meet when he piloted Bryan's Jewel across the wire first in the Obeah Stakes (G3).
Through July 6, he was second in Delaware's current jockey standings with a record of 27 wins from 105 mounts.
Cintron was not sure he would ever ride again after suffering injuries to his face, knee, and shoulder blade from a spill Nov. 19, 2017.
"I am just so thankful to reach this milestone," Cintron said. "Not so long ago, I was not sure about ever riding again after recovering from injuries I suffered in a spill and to get career win 1,000 and last week to get my first grade 1, it is just amazing."
