Freshman sire Dramedy simultaneously gained his first winner and his first horse to score at the black-type level July 12 when Southgate won the Iowa Stallion Futurity at Prairie Meadows.
Campaigned by Michael Schmidt and trained by Scott Young, the 2-year-old gelding improved from running last of three at first asking June 16 in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight. In Friday's race, he set the pace going 5 1/2 furlongs and was never headed under jockey David Cabrera. After posting opening fractions of :22.68, :46.45, and :58.78, he drew off to a 1 3/4-length win in a final time of 1:05.39 on a fast track.
Southgate was bred in Oklahoma by the John James Revocable Trust out of the Dixieland Band mare Perfect Southerner. James campaigned Dramedy, a son of Distorted Humor , in partnership with Clark Brewster and still owns the stallion.
Trained for eight of his 18 starts by the late Gerald Aschinger, Dramedy raced to a 4-2-1 record, with earnings of $271,440. His biggest win came in the 2015 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland. After standing his first two seasons at War Horse Place in Kentucky, he was relocated to River Oaks Farms in Oklahoma for the 2018 season. His 2019 fee was $2,000.
