Jockey Huber Villa-Gomez won his 2,000th career race when Cozar's Queen went gate to wire to win the second race at Presque Isle Downs July 18.
Bred in Pennsylvania by her owner and trainer, Randall R. Russell, the 5-year-old Cozar's Queen won the six-furlong maiden special weight event in final time 1:11.69 as the 7-10 favorite in the three-horse field.
According to Equibase statistics, Villa-Gomez has won 15% of his 13,391 career mounts, with $30,525,508 in earnings through Thursday. The best horse he has ridden has been multiple grade 3 winner Cactus Kris.
Born Jan. 28, 1976, in Peru, Villa-Gomez attended jockey school and began his career in his native country in 1997. Among his achievements was finishing second in the Presque Isle jockey standings in 2017 with 80 wins and in 2011 he rode Sneaking Uponyou to victory in the Florida Cup Hilton Garden Inn Sprint at Tampa Bay Downs in track-record time (since lowered) of 1:08.69 for six furlongs.
