Trainer Chad Brown was bound to win the $130,500 Lake George Stakes (G3T) July 19 at Saratoga Race Course. In fact, it was a sure bet his runners would sweep the race.
After all, the one-mile turf test was scratched down to just three fillies—and they were all in his stable.
Sent off as the third choice at odds of 2-1, Regal Glory proved to be the best of the three Friday, picking up her first graded stakes victory as her stablemates—off at odds of 6-5—finished behind her.
"It's never happened before and it'll probably never happen again, so it was definitely unusual, but we're happy," Brown said. "All three fillies seemed to run well, and Regal Glory just had a little more today.
"This time around … I told all the jockeys, 'Look, just try to ride your own race and do the best you can to win," he continued. "Outside of that, if you want to talk to your individual clients or representatives that are here today, please do so and draw up a plan.' I didn't give any instructions other than that. I thought that was the fairest way to do it. … As it turns out, I thought all three fillies ran pretty well."
At the break, Jose Ortiz sent Peter Brant's Blowout to the front while LNJ Foxwoods' Dogtag and Paul Pompa Jr.'s homebred Regal Glory settled behind her. As fractions went in :24.99, :48.66, and 1:12.82 for six furlongs, that order did not change.
But at the top of the turn, Luis Saez asked Regal Glory for more, and the filly bolted like she would make a sweeping move to the outside of the two leaders.
Dogtag and Javier Castellano cut the corner and Blowout picked up the pace, and by the time they reached the eighth pole, they were three across the track. As Dogtag faded slightly in the stretch, Regal Glory dug in and gave one final kick to get by Blowout, stopping the clock in 1:36.23 on the firm turf and winning by a half-length.
Dogtag finished another 1 3/4 lengths back in third. The winner returned $6.60.
Regal Glory has not finished worse than second in six starts.
"I had horse. I just wanted to move her out a little bit because she has a big turn of foot in the stretch and everything was perfect," Saez said. "She always tries hard. Last time was an impressive win, and I really liked her today. I knew that I would have horse in the stretch."
She came into the Lake George off a score in the June 1 Penn Oaks at Penn National. She made her first two starts of the year in graded stakes, finishing second in both the Feb. 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park and Appalachian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2T) at Keeneland, where she was defeated 1 1/4 lengths by The Mackem Bullet, one of four scratches from the Lake George.
Last year, the Animal Kingdom filly won both of her starts at 2, taking a maiden race at Belmont Park by 5 1/2 lengths in her debut and adding Aqueduct Racetrack's Stewart Manor Stakes a month later. Regal Glory has earned $356,750.
Out of the grade 2-winning More Than Ready mare Mary's Follies, Regal Glory is a half sister to graded stakes winner Night Prowler.
