Basin breaks his maiden at Saratoga Race Course

Jackpot Ranch's Basin became the first winner for freshman sire Liam's Map  when he took over early in a six-furlong maiden special weight at Saratoga Race Course July 21 and pulled clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Basin broke second and was a head off the pace as the first quarter-mile went in :22.32, then took over to run a half-mile in :45.38. The 2-year-old bay colt kept on despite drifting into the two path in the final 70 yards and stopped the clock in 1:09.77 on a fast track.

Sunday's race was the second start for Basin, who was ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. both times for trainer Steve Asmussen. He was runner-up in his debut June 14 at Churchill Downs after running three-wide late to miss by a nose going 5 1/2 furlongs.

Basin was bred in Kentucky by Cottonwood Stables out of the Johannesburg mare Appenzell. He is a half brother to six-time stakes winner Rise Up, whose biggest victory came in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3). Brookdale Sales consigned Basin to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where Jackpot Farm purchased him for $150,000. He's earned $68,500.

Liam's Map, an 8-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, retired to stud after winning the 2015 Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Keeneland. Todd Pletcher trained the gray/roan horse for Teresa Viola Racing Stables, with West Point Thoroughbreds buying in before the Breeders' Cup. Liam's Map also won the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga and retired with a 6-2-0 record from eight starts, earning $1,358,940.

He stands at Lane's End in Versailles, Ky., where he is listed for a fee of $20,000 in 2019.
