Circus Maximus wins St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot winners Lord Glitters and Circus Maximus were among eight declarations for the July 31 one-mile Qatar Sussex Stakes (G1), the feature race July 31, the second day of Glorious Goodwood.

Trained by David O'Meara, Lord Glitters will enter off a narrow victory in the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) June 18 at Ascot where the same day Circus Maximus, a 3-year-old son of Galileo, claimed a neck score in the St James's Palace Stakes (G1) over other sophomores.

Four of the eight group 1 hopefuls are 3-year-olds, with Aidan O'Brien's St James's Palace Stakes winner clashing again with John Gosden's 2018 European champion juvenile male Too Darn Hot, who was third that day but landed the Qatar Prix Jean Prat (G1) July 7 at Deauville.

The Sussex is a Breeders' Cup Challenge event carrying "Win and You're In" status to the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T). The race also is a British Champions Series event.

Tattersalls Irish Two Thousand Guineas (G1) hero Phoenix of Spain, sixth in the St. James's Palace, also lines up.

Lord Glitters faces just one of the rivals he defeated in the Queen Anne, with only Accidental Agent—who refused to race at Royal Ascot—re-opposing O'Meara's 6-year-old.

I Can Fly is the only filly in the field.
