Riversedge Racing Stables' Bare Back Jack became the first winner for freshman sire Bakken when he scored a neck victory in his third start Aug. 5 at Century Mile in Alberta, Canada.
Vying for the early lead in the 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight, Bare Back Jack kept a head in front as a quarter-mile went in :22.30 and a half-mile went in :45.98. The gelding gained a length lead in the stretch and fought off a threat when Dune d'Oro cut into that lead.
Bred in Alberta by Moonshine Meadow Ranch, Bare Back Jack is the third winner out of the Captain Bodgit mare Thesefoolishthings from as many foals to race.
Bakken, who has stood at Stoneridge Farm in British Columbia since his retirement in 2016 for a fee of $1,500, was campaigned by Mr. and Mrs. William Warren and trained by Chad Brown. During his racing career, the son of Distorted Humor won three times. His most notable effort was a runner-up finish to Palace in the True North Stakes (G2) as a 3-year-old.
He showed promise breaking his maiden on debut by 6 1/2 lengths and followed that performance with an allowance victory. In his stakes debut, he placed fifth in the Malibu (G1) in his last start of his 2-year-old season. After his third win at 3, he gave an off-the-board effort in the Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).
Bakken retired with a record of 3-2-0 from 10 starts and earnings of $223,900.
