A patient ride by jockey Abel Cedillo proved worthwhile aboard Law Abidin Citizen as the pair inched just in front of 3-5 favorite Anyportinastorm at the wire to win the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) Aug. 11 at Emerald Downs.
A regular in California, Law Abidin Citizen has had off and on success for trainer Mark Glatt, winning his debut by 5 1/4 lengths as a 3-year-old at Santa Anita Park after placing no worse than fourth in his first four starts as a juvenile. He then placed second in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) but remained at the allowance optional claiming level through most of his next season posting only two wins from nine starts.
In 2019, he won the San Simeon Stakes (G3) in his third start of the year, but finished seventh in the Triple Bend (G2) and second in the American Stakes, all at Santa Anita. He came into the Longacres off an off-the-board effort in Del Mar's Wickerr Stakes July 21.
In Sunday's Longacre Mile, the 5-year-old son of Twirling Candy stalked the pace from third as Anyportinastorm led with fractions of :23.05, :45.58, and 1:09.37 through six furlongs. Law Abidin Citizen moved up to second on the turn and began to gain momentum as the favorite took the field down the stretch.
At the wire Law Abidin Citizen just had enough to stop the clock in 1:34.08 a head in front. Anyportinastorm held for second as Restrainedvengence finished a neck back in third. It was another 6 1/4 lengths back to fourth-placed Solid Wager.
The winner returned $15.60, $4.80, and $4.20 across the board, while Aportinastorm paid $2.60 and $2.40 for second. Restrainedvengence returned $9 to show.
Bred by Hill 'n' Dale Holdings in Kentucky, Law Abidin Citizen was a $100,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase by Glatt for owners Dan Agnew, Gerry Schneider, and John Xitco. The gelding is out of the Tale of the Cat mare Honest Answer and is the older half brother to Forward Gal (G3) winner Feedback.
