WinStar Farm's Outwork achieved his first half-million dollar price tag Aug. 12 when Hip 495, a yearling filly was purchased for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Sale by It's All About the Girls Stable, JCE Racing, and Travis Durr.
Consigned by Denali Stud, agent, the filly is a half sister to Bye Bye Hong Kong, a stakes winner in England, and to the promising 2-year-old colt Our Country, a son of Constitution who is a winner in two starts and has earned $54,900.
"She's a filly that Travis really liked and when I went and saw her—she's a really pretty filly," said Jeremiah Englehart of JCE Racing, who signed the winning ticket. "I like the sire and I'm glad that we got her. I've been outbid on a lot of Outworks so glad we got this one."
The filly was produced from the unraced Tiznow mare Light and Variable, a half sister to grade 2 winner Nonna Mela. Her female family includes grade 1 winner and sire Bluegrass Cat and graded stakes winners Lord of the Game and Dramedy , among other black-type winners.
A son of Uncle Mo , Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) winner Outwork retired to stud at WinStar in 2017 with total purse earnings of $701,800. He stands for a fee of $15,000.
"I thought she'd be right about there (on price), maybe a little less," Englehart said. "A lot of the right people were on her so I'm happy we got her.
"Nowadays, Fasig-Tipton is bringing a really nice quality horse here ... Some of these horses could have sold last week at the select sale. Fasig is doing a really nice job in making sure they're bringing the right horses here."
Englehardt and Durr picked up four other yearlings during Monday's session: Hip 421, a $50,000 colt by Strong Mandate —Feelin Abit Frisky, by Posse consigned by Vinery Sales agent for Rainbow Fields Farm; Hip 461, a $70,000 filly by Liam's Map —Holy Wine, by Holy Bull from Gainesway, agent; a $65,000 filly by First Samurai —Lemon Drop Dolly, by Lemond Drop Kid consigned as Hip 493 by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, agent; and Hip 556, a filly by Laoban —Perfect Setting, by Old Fashioned for $10,000 from Bluewater Sales, agent.
